A Poor King
Sep 26, 2025
Here is a story, a learning and a question for you to reflect on this week..…
STORY
There was once a king who had it all—land, gold, armies, and servants. To his people, he was the richest man alive. But in his own mind, he was poor.
One day, his neighbor arrived on a grand horse, said to be the fastest in all the kingdoms. The king smiled politely, but inside he thought, Why don’t I have a horse like that?
Another time, his cousin visited wearing a new crown with the biggest diamond in the land at its center. The king laughed with him at the banquet, but later stared at his own crown, which suddenly felt small and ordinary.
He visited his brother’s palace one day and was amazed to see the recently constructed buildings and gardens. The king nodded, congratulated him, then lay awake at night, feeling desolate about his own palace.
No matter how much he had, someone else always seemed to have more. And so, though he was one of the richest kings alive, he lived as the poor king.
LEARNING
The king wasn’t poor because of what he lacked. He was poor because he couldn’t see what he already had. Comparison had blinded him.
A few reminders we can take from his life:
Comparison never ends. There will always be someone with more.
Wealth without contentment is poverty. Riches can’t fill an empty mind.
Gratitude is real wealth. Being present with what you have creates peace.
True success isn’t measured by possessions, but by the ability to feel whole while still growing. Otherwise, no matter how much we collect, life becomes a treadmill — fast, exhausting, and never enough.
QUESTION
Where in your life do you already have enough, but still feel poor because you’re looking at someone else’s “more”?
